Over the past several days, Burin Peninsula RCMP have encountered several instances of motorists failing to yield to emergency vehicles that were responding to urgent calls for police response.
RCMP NL reminds motorists that immediately upon the approach of an emergency vehicle with emergency equipment activated, drivers are required to yield the right-of-way to the emergency vehicle.
Motorists must immediately pull over to the side of the roadway or to the curb, clear of an intersection, stop and remain in that position until the emergency vehicle has passed. Drivers are also prohibited from overtaking an emergency vehicle travelling on the roadway with its emergency equipment activated.
Failing to yield to an emergency vehicle causes delays in response time which can be crucial to the safety of those awaiting police and or other emergency vehicle response.
