News release

This past weekend, the PEI RCMP along with MADD Canada volunteers conducted Operation Impact, a Canadian Association of Chiefs of Police national traffic safety campaign. The goal of this campaign is to raise public awareness of the risks associated with engaging in dangerous and illegal driving behaviours.

On October 9, 2021, members of the Prince, Kings and Queens District RCMP, along with MADD Canada volunteers, set up nine different traffic checkpoints across the Island. Of note, thirteen drivers were asked to provide a breath sample, six tickets were issued for impaired driving, and three individuals were issued seven-day driver's licence suspension.

"Driving while impaired or distracted can result in more than just a ticket or a suspended licence, it could cost someone their life," said Sgt. Chris Gunn with the PEI RCMP. "If you choose to drive, make sure you are driving sober and responsibly.

These targeted traffic efforts aim to improve road safety, educate motorists about the rules, and to reduce serious injury and fatal collisions. If you would like to make a difference in your community and join the fight against impaired driving, visit the MADD PEI Chapter for information on how you can help.
