Infodemics

Infodemic (n): an infodemic is a situation in which a lot of unreliable information is being spread in a way that is harmful. An infodemic can spread quickly, especially on the internet.

With so much information at our fingertips, thinking critically about what you hear, read, and see has never been more important. Critical thinking helps us consider the actual facts before forming an opinion.

Thinking critically can reduce your chances of falling victim to fraud, cybercrime, and disinformation campaigns.

It can also help you avoid becoming radicalized to the point where you believe violence is the only option (violent extremism).

Tips for preventing an infodemic.

Think critically

…before reacting, sharing, re-posting, or forwarding something online!

When looking at images or other information online or elsewhere, it’s important to ask:

1. Who posted the content?

Are they reliable?
Do they have a particular bias?

2. What are they saying?

Could the images or video be altered or taken out of context?

3. Where can I verify this information?

Are references or citations available?

4. When was the content posted?

Is it current or older?

5. Why do you think it was posted?

What is the intent of the message?

6. How do they want you to feel?

What do they want you to do?

Real or deepfake?

A deepfake uses software to alter images and make it appear as if something happened that did not. It can include, among many things, altering a video to change a person’s actions or the words coming out of their mouth.

Before believing everything that you hear and see, think critically!
